Today you are going to be doing some internet activities dealing with Simple Machines.  Just follow the steps below to have some fun with Simple Machines.  You are going to need your headphones, so get them on and get them plugged in.  Make sure you continue to come back to this page for directions.

ACTIVITY 1:  EDHEADS:  Simple Machines

1.  Go to this link:  http://edheads.org/simple-machines

2.   Read steps 3-6 BEFORE you continue. Remember, everything you are going to do in this WEBQUEST counts for a grade so take your time and do well!  Ask questions if you need help!

3.  Click on the arrow to open a new window.  You will see "The House" and "The Tool Shed".  When you put your cursor on "The  House" it gives you 4 room options.  Pick one of the rooms to begin.  DO NOT GO TO THE TOOL SHED!

4.   You will need to find 10 simple machines in each scene. Do this by click items on the screen that are made up of a simple machine.

5.  You will be asked 1 or 2 questions about each simple machine you find.  Once you have found all of the machines and answered all of the questions, a new window will open and you will be asked to enter your name and select a grade level.  Please type your first name and select Grade 5/6

6.  Then it will ask you to print. . . . but, DO NOT PRINT!!  Instead, bring your Chromebook up to my podium and I will record your score.     The number of questions you get correct will be a grade entered in the grade book for Science.  Do each quiz ONLY one time, otherwise you are cheating.

7. Once you finish with the first room of "The House", go back and select a second room, answer the questions and bring your score to me so I can record it.  Do this same thing for the third and fourth rooms too.

8.  After you have completed all 4 rooms in "The House". go to "The Tool Shed".  This one is about compound machines and is a little tougher.  Once you have finished,  I will need to record your score.

9.  Move on to ACTIVITY 2.

  ACTIVITY 2:  ABSURD MACHINES

People are always trying to come up with the next new invention.  This activity is designed to let you see some of the craziest inventions people have actually created!

15.  Click on this link to see the crazy ideas people can come up with. http://www.totallyabsurd.com/absurd.htm

16.  Take some time to look through these actual suggestions for inventions using lots of simple and compound machines. You are going to find some funny ones and some that are extremely odd.  These are all real USA Patented Inventions.  Make sure to stay away from any that sound inappropriate!

17.  There is a document in your Google Classroom(#063) for you to record your answers on.

18.  Your job is to find an Absurd Machine from this website that would fit the definition of each of the 6 simple machines.  Copy and paste the picture of the goofy machine below the name of the simple machine it is most closely demonstrating.  Do not use a picture more than once and resize the pictures you choose to fit the space provided. Remember, part of the machine should work as one of the simple machines. Next to the photo, there is space for you to explain which part of the machine is demonstrating the simple machine you selected.

ACTIVITY 3:  Leonardo Da Vinci

Most people know that Da Vinci was an artist.  But did you also know he was a scientist and an inventor?

23.   Leonard Da Vinci is the focus of this next activity.  You will be reading more about this creative genius!  There is a document in your Google Classroom (#067) which contains the directions for this activity.

ACTIVITY 4:  Rube Goldberg

25.  This is just one example of something known as a RUBE GOLDBERG

machine.   Rube Goldberg, was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author,

engineer, and inventor. Goldberg is best known for his popular cartoons

depicting complicated gadgets performing simple tasks in indirect,

convoluted ways.  You probably have watched a lot of examples of these

on YouTube or Tic Tok.  Here are a couple of more to enjoy . . . .

26.  Start a new Google Doc and name it  RUBE GOLDBERG.  Go to this YouTube video of a Rube Goldberg Machine.   Then, I would like you to number the events  in the order they  must occur for the Rube Goldberg machine to work to turn the page of the newspaper.  You may need to watch it several times

This is what you need to type for number 1.

               1.   The man takes a drink from his mug which pulls the pencil from the painting behind him.

Be very specific and list ALL of the steps.
